LORD is my life!!!! It's been a long time since I typed that sentence. I asked last month just how many LORD-clones CyberSpace could support. For my BBS, the answer seems to be no more. However, some warrior are bound to accomplish 10 heroic deeds during this month and I want to bring a "fresh" LORD back up. That means it's dreaded IGM time again. As always, all files mentioned are available for freq by filename at 1:14/787 and most are on ftp.ldl.net. I've been sooooooooooooooo pleased with my choices of IGMs that finding replacements is particularly challenging. Many new ones have been released since I last played in the lala land of LORD. I had this naive assumption that improvements in quality had been made. W R O N G!!! I looked at seven of the newer IGMs. Two are possible contenders!! ET200.ZIP gave me a runtime error and that was all she wrote. I tried manually installing the IGM with every command line that I could conceive to no avail. BALDUR20.ZIP has the most annoying unregistered beep. It also locked my system...sort of. I could continue in the IGM. I just couldn't get out. I think I spotted the error on the command line that was part of the installation process. However, I didn't see anything that original in this IGM although the $2 registration price is modest enough. At the other end of the pricing spectrum is Fat Man's Misery. FMM104A.ZIP is$12 and it didn't even install itself correctly. This IGM isn't bad, it's just way over-priced. MOI21.ZIP has a minor glitch. Joshua Eckerman gives superb technical support so I have hopes for Mirror Of Illusions yet. The price is $5. Joshua's TAL11.ZIP popped in perfectly and is a fun way to increase skills and make a bit of money. The code has been modified to adjust for level and not allow multiple-entries. This one is freeware.OLMAN21.ZIP is a jewel. The IGM is just plain cute. It's a shooting gallery supervised by a wizard. It might be a bit too powerful, but I'm sure going to spend some time investigating. This one is freeware. The same author also wrote SKIGM101.ZIP. It's equally clever. However, this one allows multiple-entries. I've notified the author and have hopes of an upgrade. Registration is $5. Let's see. I could spend $5 to register a buggy IGM or I could spend $5 to register a full-blown, multi-node door that is stable as a rock. Gee. What a decision!!! THILO100.ZIP was released this month. It's a card door where you bet whether the next card will be higher or lower. My users have had a ball with this doorgame. Tim Ward is putting together an impressive body of work. I could even register another $5 door instead of a buggy IGM. KZWRD140.ZIP is a very good crossword puzzle doorgame. It even allows users to make puzzles and contribute them to the board. This door does have one drawback. It doesn't detect no keystroke. I normally wouldn't leave a door online with this limitation. However, I was just too hooked on the door to delete it. I've contacted the author and have hopes of an upgrade soon. Planet Teos has been released as PTEOS200.ZIP. Seth also made an IGM available for the game. LANDF100.ZIP is a tetris approach to making more money. The IGM is freeware. Joseph Masters has also released an IGM for Teos with RAE101.ZIP. It's a real-time ANSI bar with many options including mutant chicken races!! Registration is $10 with generous discounts for registration of multiple products. I had never tried one of the artificial intelligence doors. LISA18.ZIPproved to be a delight. Installation was totally painless. This door canbe set to G, R, or X rating. I'm running it in G mode. While I think the unregistered delay is a bit long and confusing to the users, I really likethe way "Lisa" handles profanity. I suspect that some of my "little darlings"would be embarrassed if they realized that the door keeps a log file of activity. I've had several good laughs! User interest has been higher and lasted longer than I'd anticipated with this door. Registrationis $12. The wait is over. Yes, it really is over. No more waiting!! GuTTeRBoWL has been released. GBOWL10.ZIP is the anticipated update to the original BBS Bowl. So much more has been added to the door that it really is far more than an upgrade. GuTTeRBoWL is as close to the bowling alley as you can get in your computer chair!!! This door supports modem speeds up to ISDN and is rock-solid. It works flawlessly multi-node on a huge array of operating systems. The installation exe is the best that I've seen. I really don't think anyone would need to read the docs to install this door. Yes, I know, nobody admits to reading docs anyway! I've been surprised how many hack and slashers find time to go bowling. The Kidware company popped a doozer with this one! Registration is $15. I may well be the only Sysop alive who isn't running a trivia door. ROCKTV10.ZIP caught my eye. It features questions on rock music from the sixties, seventies and eighties. I'll bet I can whup ma users on them sixties songs! Installation was a complete no-brainer. Registration is $15. I lied. LORD really isn't my life!! I purposefully avoided the RPGs this month. For those in an RPG mood, DRAKE2_2.ZIP looks promising.TERRA840.ZIP is another contender. The next RPG that I'll install will be Galaxy 5 (G5107B.ZIP). Thomas Smith wrote such a cute IGM for LORD and has provided a free IGM for his game. SCRIBE10.ZIP is the file name for that one. I've always been a fan of Ken Weitzel's work. Ken haswritten BIKE12.ZIP to go with Galaxy 5. Somehow, Galaxy 5 is my life just doesn't have the same ring!!! þ
