To all what is the best virus checker out there? --->The one that finds and removes the virus you didn't know you had. :) Seriously, using several is probably the best thing to do. They're all good, but nothing is perfect. Nothing. --->McAffee's SCAN.EXE ---->TurboEDIT v1.00a [MSP95] ----->It's kind of a pain in the butt but I'd recommend using THD Pro. It's a type of shell program that runs 3 other viral checkers: MacAfee's Scan, which compares against a list of know codes, ThunderByte, which does the same, and F-Prot (my fav...) which is capable of the same as the above in addition to using a "heuristic" scan which actually looks for sequences of machine code that *could* indicate a virus... ------> F-Prot is the best, viris checker .... Presently using FMAIL but I wonder which is the best one to use and why between FMAIL & GECHO. If anyone has experience with both could you tell me which one you would/have choose/sen and why? > FMail - speed. I not only have to toss my inbound mail for my personal system, but also have to rebundle, sort and pack outbound mail for each of my 19 Points. GEcho, for all it's positive aspects, is sadly inferior for this purpose - it's simply too slow. >>While I can't speak on the merrits of FMail I can tell you that speed is not a concern in the newer versions of GEcho. I'm the NC of a 100+ node net. We are operating a central mail server that also serves as a Region hub for Fido's Region 13, feeding several other nets. The server is running GEcho v1.20 under OS/2 and tossing is amazingly fast. GEcho's processing speed is the least of our concerns running this system. We ususally can't get rid of the stuff via the two 28.8 phones as fast as GEcho processes it. >>>GECHO _IS_ better, but since FMAIL requires no registration fee, I would certainly use it. As far as I'm concernced, FMAIL does the job BRILLIANTLY! >>>>> FMail - speed. Subj : Romdoor HELP!! When I ran it under DOS, everything seemed to work great, but since I got WIN95 for Christmas, I installed it, now most of my Door games won't work. The local screen will start to show the ANSI graphics for the games in question, then just quicks and freezes up the system. The remote terminal just hangs without showing any signs of entering the door. >>>Well, I don't run Wildcat or Win '95, but you know what this sounds like? This sounds like your DOOR.SYS drop file has the wrong port number in it. I know that sounds impossible since you ran them before with no problems. But the only time I've seen a door do that is when the drop file either had a 0 for the com port or the port number for another active node at the time. >>>>I was advised by Mustang Software (the authors of Wildcat) that they had a text file for optimum settings, so I d/l it from their BBS. One of the things it mentioned was to use a FOSSIL driver, which I installed and now most of my doors (not all yet) are working, but any door which uses DDSETUP runs very slow. I use a 14,400 baud modem and the text file stated to lock the baud rate at 57600, but they still run slow. >>>>>I noted your message about doors running slow under Wildcat & Windows. You might want to take a peek at your FIFO TRANSMIT and RECEIVE buffer settings. MSI noted that these settings can have a "pronounced effect on performance", in the addendum file which accompanies Wildcat! software. >>>>>Well if you are using a door that uses DDSETUP.EXE, chances are it was written with the DDPLUS door development kit. If your port is locked at 57600 and you are using a Fossil driver, you need to have your I/O settings in your .CTL files set to XFOSSIL plus lock the baud rate on _ALL_ of your doors at the same rate. As for the doors running slow, I'm not really sure about that, I used to use the DDPLUS kit for all of my doors - but that was a problem I was running into as well so I abandonned it and started writing my own just recently. I don't really know any way around that problem. >>>>>>>I got a file from Mustang regarding the settings to use for WIN95 and one of the things mentined in that document was the FIFI buffers....they suggested setting them at 14 which I did, but I'm still having trouble with some of the doors. The ones which run the slowest are the ones that use DDSETUP as the configuration program, such as Usurper, Godfather of Crime, Task Force Broadside & Ship of the Line. And I also seem to have a problem with LORD v3.26a, if the WIN95 screen saver kicks in, it locks up the game, but all I have to do is move my mouse and the game starts....but by this time, the caller has usually hung up. ??????DDSETUP.EXE. I have the I/O settings at XFOSSIL, so that's not the problem with the door running slow. You mentioned you had problems as well with slow running games so you started writing your own setup program. Has it helped the speed...... personally, I think there must be a conflict somewhere with WIN95 and the BBS shelling out to the door, because, especially with Usurper, the maintenance can take almost 5 minutes....I pity the first caller who tries the door each day! And it's not just the remote, if I try it from my local node, same thing! Frustrating....Maybe I'll just have to wait for all the door authors to write 32bit door games... >>>>>>This sounds like the PIF files (windows) are set to detect idle time... Don't do this with any DOS program or Windows will stop giving time to modem based games/doors which are do-not release time-slices on their own!!! You might want to check out WinFossil or ADF as an alternative fossil since both are "multi-tasking aware."
