Hello All! Door World stated that they wanted a brief history of my BBS well, so here it goes... History: The Back Alley BBS Sysop: Mike Perks Age: 32 Wife: Janice child: Matthew Real life Job: Garderner Well you may be wondering what gardening and computers have in common. Well I am still trying to figure it all out myself... In October 1994 I found myself having to spend 6 weeks at home due to a health problem and became bored very quickly. It was then I decided to LEARN about that 3000 dollar 486DX33 downstairs in the basement... Up until that time I used the computer for one thing and one thing only: --->LINKS GOLF... Well, after sitting around and reading of all things the MSDOS 6.2 manual had to say I began to think that this computer had some potential or maybe it was I that was beginning to have confidence ... Dont know but, that was when I bought a MODEM around the second week of October. >From that moment on I was HOOKED... I could stay up all night and phone BBS's all over the US and Canada.. Living on the west coast of Vancouver Island in Parksville BC anywhere is LONG DISTANCE... It was great, downloading files and running programs. It was like a dream come true, UNTIl ahhhh! the PHONE BILL Well, to this day that is still a touchy subject in the old Perks' home. Usually only brought up when buddies come around and some how bring it up in front of my wife ( Nice friends )... Was really 200 dollars that much when I said that I would never go over 10 ??? Well that blew over quick enough and things calmed down until the middle of Decmenber when I got the great idea that I would try to set up a BBS.. In the Parksville BC Area we only have 4 BBS's that are local calls. All the rest are long distance so I felt there was room for more... I looked at possibly every bbs package that I could think of... RA, Wildcat and Searchlight Syncronet to name only a few.. Then perhaps by chance I stummbled across OSIRIS XLT 2.00... I now run Osiris XLT 4.0 which you can DL from my Home page. It had everything that I was looking for... Built in mailer, Internet capabilities, Rip graphics and its own programming language (like as if back then I would ever think I'd use it ). It was the package that I was looking for... So after using the demo version for a month and the excellent support from the Osiris XLT support crew, I sent in the money... At first I only bought the BBS package minus the INTERNET and the MAILER. I set up the FRONTDOOR freeware version mailer with the help of my NC and got my node number... That was in Jan/Feb... In Mar95 I finally purchased the Internet package and the built in mailer that was disabled until I got the reg key... The whole system is one complete package.. Easy to configure secure and most of all STABLE... In March I got my UUCP account from my Internet Provider and I now offer to my users of 120 Internet email and over 35 Newsgroups... I consider my BBS a game board mostly with 6 out of 12 games reg... I do not have a large file base but it is growing everyday. I am currently a distribution site for RPG 2100 DoorWare makers of DEATH MASTERS 1.30. I also maintain a home page that tells about my BBS and RPG-2100 DoorWare. Its address is http://www.island.net/~mperks/ I enjoy my hobby BBS. It's entertaining and eductional all at the same time... I have a 4 yr old son Matthew and he enjoys hanging around the basement with his Dad playing with his baby s (that's what he calls it), in the corner along side of mine(Its an old shell of a XT that a friend gave me...haha.). Having the Internet come directly to the board is a feature that I think all sysops should experience... I love the fact that I can write a message in the morning and by noon that day I'll have a reply... Well Thats just a little history of The Back Alley BBS and myself... It's probably alot like some others....
