Featured System Operator: Chris Burgy The Hidden Door BBS Bakersfield, CA (805)836-9162 Seems like yesterday that I got my CPU but it was over a year and a half ago already. Then it wasn't until January 1995 that I discovered the world of bulletin board systems and all they had to offer. With a whole other avenue to explore, I began calling around to check out the various ones out there and available. Curiosity, (besides killing the cat ) lead me to think that I might like to run one myself. The search was on...Using my new 14.4k USR Sportster I joined AOL (America On-line) and search endlessly for the BBS that would best suit my needs. It seems like I have downloaded and tried nearly every BBS package yet written. For one reason or another I was not satisfied and bounced from Power BBS to RBBS to Wildcat2.61td to TBBS---the list is endless. Finally I settled on what I think is the most powerful, yet easiest shareware software--->KBBS. After some doing, my BBS was ready to go. Initially my hours were 9:00pm to 6:00am. Callers began to respond while some even offered feedback and ideas. Things began to expand with new files, more doors and more importantly, positive feedback from exisiting SysOps, particularly Fred Thompson. Fred's a sysop in Bakersfield, CA whose encouragement and support were always present. When Fred mentioned to me one day "Chris you are going to be big in the computer world", I thought that was an interesting prospect and continued doing what I had been. Finally I got Wildcat V and started that I consider "my real work". Here in Kern County we have a Top Ten BBS list for both BBS's and SysOps where I squeaked by for the 10th position with my KBBS. It wasn't until I set up with WC! that I jumped into the 5th position in both categories. The following month I vaulted into the number 2 spot. Needless to say I was extremely happy and having lots of fun. My goal at that point became reaching the "top spot"--#1. Well, with brand new menus and with Door Manager (3.44) controlling many more doors I obtained top of the list status and was proclaimed to be the #1 SysOp and BBS in Kern County. The great ideas kept coming and I recognized the need for a Tech Support team. This currently consists of a staff of 15+ and my own programming team of 4+. My #1 status remains in Kern County and most recently was voted #1 Single line BBS in California as of September 1, 1995. At this time I am running Wildcat 4.11 SL, 486 dx2/50mhz, 1.5gb's, 2x cd-rom, win 3.11 and dos 6.22 as my system. Currently I find myself programming for various companies and am talking with an InterNet provider regrading the upkeep of their staff CPU's in Bakersfield for a new InterNet service. Coming soon will be TeleNet access for my board, my own WWW site, ftp, InterNet e-mail and news groups.
